Apple to unveil iPhone 5, iPad mini on September 12 ?

If this rumor proves to be true, this could be one of the biggest pieces of tech news for this entire year.

Quoting “sources who have proven to be accurate in the past”, tech site iMore said, “Apple is planning to debut the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, 12 September 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, 21 September.”

Speculation that Apple will release an iPad mini has been refusing to die down, and this latest piece of news is bound to hit the rumor mills even harder. However it was widely expected that both devices would be launched in October. If both do exist however, it would most probably make sense for Apple to launch them earlier, especially as the company blamed its disappointing Q3 results on hype around the iPhone 5.

Apple did post a 23 percent jump in revenue from the same quarter the previous year to $35 billion, but that was about $2 billion below Wall Street’s average forecast. The company said that they had sold less phones of the iPhone 4S as most people were waiting for the next model.

There has literally been a slew of rumours to the effect that Apple is all set to launch a smaller version of it’s popular iPad to take on Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7 tablet.

A Bloomberg report had stated that Apple would launch the mini iPad this October. It added that The new model will have a screen that’s 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t made its plans public. Its unlikely that the iPad mini will have Retina Display like the new iPad.

Apple’s iPad mini could be priced much less than the $499 Apple iPad according to a New York Times report.

As for the new iPhone, according to a Wall Street Journal report, the next iPhone will use a new technology that makes the smartphone’s screen thinner, which quoted people familiar with the matter.

The report says,

Japanese liquid crystal display makers Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc — a new company that combined three Japanese electronics makers’ display units — as well as South Korea’s LG Display Co are currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone using so-called in-cell technology.

The technology, which integrates touch sensors into the LCD, makes it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer. The absence of the layer, usually about half a millimeter thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but the quality of displayed images would improve, said DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase.

Thanks to in-cell technology Apple’s next iPhone would not only have a thinner screen but the sharper resolution will also be maintained. A thinner screen has led to speculations that Apple could also reduce the battery size thus ensuring an over-all thinner iPhone.MacRumours has more details on how the screen of the next iPhone would differ from the current one.

AppleInsider had reported that leaked photos from Chinese production units showed that Apple’s new phone has entered the production phase complete with design changes including the addition of glass to the unit’s “uni-body” backplate
